I recently pick up a virus on my computer that necessitated taking it to the computer doctor, which meant for a couple of days I had to use my old computer setup. Though it was a good setup at one time, it is now so obsolete and junked-up it cannot even connect to the internet. But these facts did have one positive result. It allowed me to access some old stories of mine that for some reason I have never been able to copy over to my new (actually just new-er) computer memory. This little memior is one of the stories I was able to revisit and I thought I would post it here so people won't think I abandoned this site completely while I work on other stories. Note to readers: Some of the story has change since it was originally posted, incorporating some of the suggestions of earlier reviewers. So if you read those earlier reviews you may not be able to find the same mistakes.

This is not actually a novel but, again, a short story that is too long for the site's word limit, so it will be published in two parts. The story occurs in December of 1862 in a Confederate Army camp outside the town of Murphreesborough, Tennessee. The town's name is spelled "Murphreesboro" today, but the spelling was not changed, deleting the "ugh" on the end, until the early-to-mid 1870s. Though you see Civil War maps and histories with the shorter spelling, these histories were written and those maps were drawn after the spelling change occurred.

Parker Ammons is a 27 year old woman living her life as she sees fit. Perfectly happy and standing on her own two feet, she is the example of a young woman most parents would wish their own daughters to be. Parker receives a string of mysterious mail that has her and her best friend Avery concerned. Could someone be out to hurt her? As suddenly as the mail started, it stops, but then things really start getting strange as Parker discovers that history isn't just written about, it's written before it happens and she is caught in the middle of a pivotal battle for humanity This is the first part of a very rough draft. I'd like to know if it seems intriguing enough to keep reading? Often I find myself in the first part of a book and I'm already bored. I've never written before so this is a first attempt. While considering things spiritual I looked up the dates of origin of the religions of the world and the dates when variations on those religions occurred. Interesting stuff. I though about a poem which incorporated that information but after a couple pages I decided that it was boring as the Congressional Record. So this poem came to mind and it seemed to fit the existing title. Comments welcome.

I am never sure which genre suits anything I write. I have chosen historical fiction because I want people, interested in history, to read it. It is, in fact, not fiction at all. It is historical fact. As usual, please point out the nits and feel free to make whatever comments you wish. Please pardon the mess . . . . This story actually begins at Chapter 51. The first draft ran from 1-43 and I am slowly disabling those chapters. The revised version begins at Chapter 51. I wasn't sure of the best method on presenting rewrites, this is what I came up with. Hope it's not too confusing . . . . Still struggling with the untimely death of her husband, Joey Fagan prepares for a vacation she's not really interested in taking. She does leave home, but finds herself still in Chicago in the year 1893, relying on a man who just might be a previous incarnation of her husband.

This is my first post. I am trying to learn the fiction writing craft. As a personal exercise, I took a paper I wrote as an undergrad about Crassus for a History of Rome class, and re-wrote it from a first person perspective. This is a story of a person who was Crassus client and right hand man. It contains a historically accurate summary of Crassus' involvement putting down Spartacus' slave revolt. Any constructive feedback to help me become a better writer is greatly appreciated.

This came out of a personal thought of mine I've often, well, thought. As a history major, my goal was to make the 'now' of things real to my students. So often history can be presented in such a dead way that it's dismissed as a boring roster of dates or a list of memorized names of all the losing vice-presidential candidates in American history (I had to do that once in college...urk!) But, for me, history is made of an ever-flowing series of now's, each as real, as vital, as present to its livers and my now is to me. Sometimes I feel an awareness of the presence of all nows and that's what I wanted to capture in this poem.

This is a revised piece in a way. It was written in haste right after the Democrats won back the majority. A friend called me and asked if I was happy. I said I was but feelings were nagging as had been here before all through my life. It seem rather pertinent to repeat it now with lots of editing as technically it was horrible. Hopefully, I have made progress but know there is still lots to correct.
